Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders clarified why Shedeur Sanders left the field early in the waning minutes of last Saturday’s loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Cameras caught Shedeur Sanders leaving the field with just two minutes left during the team’s 28-10 blowout loss to their archrivals at Memorial Stadium. Sanders was widely criticized on social media, with fans calling his premature exit a “classless” move:
Speaking to reporters ahead of Saturday’s road game against Colorado State, “Prime Time” provided an injury update on his players. During the presser, Deion stated that Shedeur Sanders left the field early on Saturday because he got “dinged” on a targeting call.
Understandably, the Buffaloes just wanted to remove Shedeur Sanders from the contest for precautionary reasons and have him checked out.
In football, it’s considered bad sportsmanship if a player leaves the field early if his team is assured of a loss. Standard protocol is for players and coaches on both teams to exchange handshakes, hugs, and messages after games. But as it turns out, Shedeur Sanders had a good reason to exit early.
Randy Moss (then with the Minnesota Vikings) and Dez Bryant (Dallas Cowboys) made headlines in 2004 and 2013, respectively, when they left the field early with their teams losing because of their discontent with the outcomes.
In Saturday’s loss to the Cornhuskers, Shedeur completed 23 pass attempts for 244 yards, a touchdown and an interception (returned for a touchdown). Sanders was under duress most of the game and took six sacks in the 28-10 loss.

The Buffs will ty to get back on a winning note when they visit the inner-state rival Colorado State Rams at Canvas Field on Saturday (7:30 p.m. EST).
This will be a rematch of last year’s thriller at Boulder, where the Buffaloes emerged victorious 43-35 in double overtime to improve to 3-0 on the season. Sanders had 348 passing yards and four touchdowns in that game.
