The San Francisco 49ers have made a surprise announcement at quarterback ahead of their Week 1 opener against the New York Jets.

Per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Brandon Allen will be the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy. Josh Dobbs, who signed a one-year deal with the 49ers in free agency, is the third-stringer.

The announcement is a bit surprising, considering that Allen didn’t play at all as the No. 3 quarterback behind Purdy and Sam Darnold.

Dobbs made 12 starts last year (split with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings) and showed some promise with a 62.8 completion percentage for 2,464 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

But the San Francisco 49ers would rather Allen be ready to take over the offense before Dobbs if the occasion calls for it. The 32-year-old has made nine career starts (three with the Denver Broncos and six with the Cincinnati Bengals), and has thrown for 1,611 yards and 10 touchdowns against six interceptions.
