VIDEO: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Reveals Very Worrying Update On Christian McCaffrey’s Injury & Possible Return Date
Christian McCaffrey won’t be starting his 2024 NFL season for quite some time.
The San Francisco 49ers were rocked by the news that Christian McCaffrey could not suit up in their season opener, and things are not getting any better.
On Sunday morning, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss at least six weeks, possibly more, after he was placed on injured reserve this weekend.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the dynamic running back, and he made it clear that his return is unknown.
“Nobody knows,” Shanahan said after the 23-17 loss to the Vikings, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com.
“We’re dealing with tendinitis, so there’s not one person [who] knows. He doesn’t know. We don’t know. We can take it day by day. By putting him on IR, it’s at least four weeks, so that’ll give him some time to rest and kind of protect him from himself. Us too. No matter how he’s feeling, it’s four at the minimum.”
In 2022, Christian McCaffrey was traded from the Carolina Panthers to the San Francisco 49ers.
He has been doing everything and more for the team.
The team did not miss him during Week One, as backup Jordan Mason ran for 147 yards.
In Week Two, Mason had 100 yards, but he is not as dangerous a pass catcher as McCaffrey is, and the team lost its first game of the year to the Vikings.
49ers RB Christian McCaffrey Placed On Injured Reserve
The San Francisco 49ers placed All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve because of his lingering calf and Achilles tendon injuries.
McCaffrey will now miss at least the next four games while recovering from Achilles tendinitis and calf tightness.
Losing McCaffrey, who has been a crucial part of the San Francisco offense, is a tough blow for the 49ers.
The 28-year-old running back is the reigning AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
