Before the Miami Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by South Florida police following a traffic violation. The incident occurred a block away from Hard Rock Stadium, hours before the 1 p.m. EDT kickoff.
Hill was reportedly cited for reckless driving before getting into a verbal altercation with an officer. Hill was then seen in handcuffs and was detained on the ground.
After receiving a ton of backlash for how they handled the situation, the South Florida Police released a statement. The statement read:
“Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released. First, to be clear, at no time was he under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger.

“Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs… Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.”
Handcuffs didn’t stop Tyreek Hill helping Miami Dolphins win their season opener against Jacksonville Jaguars
Despite being in handcuffs and having a run-in with the police hours before the team’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tyreek Hill helped the Dolphins earn a 20-17 victory against their Florida foe.
After Jacksonville took a 17-7 lead at halftime, Hill showed his explosiveness and broke free for a long 80-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Hill then allegedly took advantage of the opportunity to troll the South Florida police.
After scoring his touchdown that put Miami within three points, Hill celebrated with fellow wide receiver Jaylen Waddle by having Waddle put imaginary cuffs on Hill’s hands.
