Up to this point, one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 NFL offseason is the lack of a new deal for Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott.

The 31-year-old Dak Prescott is entering the final season of a four-year deal worth $160 million he signed in the 2021 offseason. The contract carries no-trade and no-tag clauses, meaning Prescott has the choice to test the open market in 2025 if he so desires.

Earlier this week, Cowboys star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb ended his holdout by agreeing to a four-year deal worth $136 million. That has naturally caused optimism in Big D about Jones extending Prescott in short time.

But a prominent NFL insider has promoted an interesting theory as to why Jones has yet to extend Dak Prescott. And if it’s true, the very theory means an extension isn’t coming for Prescott.

As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, Jerry Jones prefers his team being “the center of attention” more than actually winning championships. And by dragging out the lack of an extension for Prescott, Jones is fulfilling his goal:

When owner Jerry Jones says, “We don’t need to get this done before the season,” he’s saying, “We won’t get this done before the season.” Which means that Dak’s future will be a constant subject of speculation and discussion and analysis until his future is known.

It meshes with Jerry’s true modus operandi. It’s not about pursuing Super Bowls. It’s about making the Cowboys the center of attention. Which keeps them among the most popular, and profitable, teams in all of sports…

The Cowboys are definitely interesting. And the questions regarding Dak’s future will drive more and more interest in the Cowboys for 2024. Will they win? It doesn’t matter. Will they get to the NFC Championship for the first time since 1995? Who cares? They’ll be interesting. They’ll command attention.

And, along the way, they’ll make even more money for Jerry. Even if he also testified that he’s never taken a profit from the team.”

Only Jerry knows deep down if this is truly his incentive to not extend Dak Prescott before the start of the season. But there’s no disputing his obsession with attention, which is why he always makes himself available to the media and likes making empty promises such as going “all-in” during the offseason without actually going all-in.

The Cowboys will kick off their 2024 season on Sept. 8 with a road contest against the Cleveland Browns.

Dak Prescott Will Get Paid Handsomely

Whether it’s from the Cowboys or another team, Prescott stands to land a lucrative contract that will easily surpass the $200 million mark. Just look at the contracts handed out this offseason to Kirk Cousins ($180 million), Trevor Lawrence ($275 million), Jared Goff ($212 million), Tua Tagovailoa ($212.4 million) and Jordan Love ($220 million).
