Canelo Alvarez’s stature in the boxing world is beyond imagination. Having faced numerous opponents, only Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather were able to defeat him. However, that doesn’t mean they were his worst rivals. Instead, it was someone whom he defeated in front of a record-breaking attendance of 73,126.

Recently, Alvarez spoke with PBC and revealed the only opponent whom he wanted to destroy in the boxing ring. And it was none other than Billy Joe Saunders. As quoted by Michael Benson in his X post, the Mexican said,

“Billy Joe Saunders – that f***er p***ed me off, that’s why he got what he deserved. Some fighters talk to sell a fight, but I think he’s a bad person and I really enjoyed beating that guy.”

Interestingly, Alvarez fought Saunders back on May 8, 2021, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. When the latter’s team threw the towel in the eighth round, the Mexican picked up a corner retirement win. After the match, Saunders was also diagnosed with a fractured orbital bone, which certainly shows the brutality of his fight with Alvarez.

When Is Canelo Alvarez Fighting Next?

Having defeated Jaime Munguia back on May 4, 2024, the Mexican boxer is all set to return to fight Edgar Berlanga on September 14, 2024. The much-anticipated boxing match will have Alvarez’s WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on the line. Moreover, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will host the event.

Canelo vs. Berlanga fight card will also have three more exciting matchups. While WBA middleweight world champion Erislandy Lara will face Danny Garcia, Caleb Plant and Trevor McCumby will fight for the WBA ‘interim’ super middleweight title. Also, the third matchup is between Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero and Manuel Jaimes.

Notably, Berlanga has also been calling out Alvarez with really harsh words. Will he suffer the same fate as Saunders? Or will he dethrone Alvarez to be the new WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion? Well, that will all be known on September 14.
