Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot, the team announced Thursday.

While the quarterback will be wearing a walking boot for approximately two weeks, he’s expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Herbert’s 2023 season was cut short after he suffered a fracture to his right index finger on Dec. 11 during a 24-7 loss to the Denver Broncos. For the season, the ex-Oregon star completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 20 touchdowns (seven interceptions) and 3,134 passing yards (6.9 yards per attempt).

The 25-year-old had never missed a game due to injury until suffering the finger fracture. He became the Bolts’ starter for Week 2 of the 2020 campaign and played every game until the Broncos matchup.

The No. 6 pick in the 2020 draft has played four NFL seasons, tossing 114 touchdowns to just 42 interceptions. His pro accolades include Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2020, a Pro Bowl nod in 2021 and a top-10 finish in the 2022 NFL MVP voting.

Herbert also led the Chargers to a 10-win season and a playoff appearance in 2022, marking the first time L.A. had accomplished either feat since 2018.

Without Herbert, L.A. turns to Easton Stick, with Max Duggan as the backup. The 28-year-old Stick, a former North Dakota State star, has been on the Chargers’ roster since joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2019.

Duggan is entering his second season out of TCU, where he who won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top collegiate quarterback. The Bolts selected him with a seventh-round choice in 2023.
