The former Heisman winner is the latest retired NFL player to express an interest in coaching and a desire to work at his alma mater in the future.

“I would love to come back and be the head coach of USC at some point and help lead USC to a national championship,” he said to the Sporting Tribune’s Arash Markazi.

Bush continued: “Lately, man, I’ve just been really having this urge inside of me to get out and coach because it’s in me. And it’s been something I’ve been thinking about a lot and actually talking to people about.”

In recent years, we have seen an influx of former star players find roles as head coaches across college football, and Reggie Bush wants in on the action.

Bush interviewed with Sacramento State for its opening, but he had little experience compared to other candidates, which is why the program went with Brennan Marion.

Reggie Bush revealed his conversation with Sacramento State while comparing his desire to coach at USC to Kirby Smart’s current leadership at Georgia.

“I actually spoke to some people over at Sacramento State for the head coaching job when that came up,” Bush said. “I spoke to some people over there about coaching, and it’s definitely something that I want to do.

“The same way Kirby Smart, a former player from Georgia, came back to coach his team to a title, I would love to do that as well at USC. I think that’d be a tremendous story, a tremendous comeback story. I think I have what it takes. I got the passion. And a lot of these kids grew up watching our era and watching our teams.”

The 2005 Heisman Trophy winner must understand that Smart worked his way up the ladder. His career in coaching began in 2000, and it wouldn’t be until 2016 that he got his first opportunity to become a head coach.

Despite that, Reggie Bush and other former players have seen what Deion Sanders has done at Jackson State and Colorado, and it has emboldened others to take that same route.

Reggie Bush Is Fresh Off Receiving His Heisman Trophy Back

Reggie Bush will always be remembered as one of the great USC running backs of all time. He helped the Trojans dominate college football. The University of Southern California Trojans were on an epic run in the early 2000s, led by Bush.

In 2005, Bush’s talent was acknowledged by his winning the most prestigious honor in college football: the Heisman Trophy.

Five years later, Bush forfeited his Heisman in 2010, the first and only player ever to do so.

Many called for it to be returned, which it would in 2024.

In April, the Heisman Trust reinstated Bush’s trophy.
