Detroit Lions superstar running back David Montgomery was initially ruled out for the season after suffering an MCL sprain against the Buffalo Bills, but the 27-year-old plans to beat the odds.

David Montgomery suffered the MCL sprain in Sunday’s home loss to the Buffalo Bills. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill is out for the year after suffering a torn ACL, and standout cornerback Carlton Davis III may also miss the rest of the year after fracturing his jaw.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Montgomery stated that he hasn’t been placed on the injured reserve because he’s hopeful about coming back this season, per Lions reporter Dannie Rogers.

Asked if he could play again this season, David Montgomery added, “I hope so.”

The Lions’ rise to NFC powerhouse status is largely thanks to the super RB duo of Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, who exceeded 1,000 yards of offense in back-to-back years together.

Detroit’s gameplan changes significantly without Montgomery in the backfield to help Gibbs. If the former can somehow return in time for the postseason, it would be a nice boost for Dan Campbell’s squad.

If Montgomery is done for the year, he still finished with an excellent stat line of 775 rushing yards, 12 rushing scores, and 1,116 total yards of offense.
