“Today is a sad, sad day,” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said, noting officers found the juvenile they believe was responsible for the shooting and adding there was no longer an active threat.
At a press conference, police erroneously said five people, including the gunman, were dead. They later walked back that death toll.
Police did not fire their weapons at the shooter.
In addition to those killed, there were others who were hurt, with their injuries ranging from critical to minor. It wasn’t immediately clear how many were injured or whether they were kids or adults.
The ages of those killed also weren’t known.

“Every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. These types of traumas don’t go away,” Barnes said. “Right now my heart is heavy for my community. My heart is heavy for Madison.”
The shooting took place just two days after the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting this past Saturday. It also follows the March 2023 shooting at a Nashville-area Christian school where gunman Audrey Hale killed six people at the facility she once attended.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement, “We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.”

Abundant Life Christian School acknowledged the shooting in a social media post Monday, writing on Facebook, “Prayers Requested! Today we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able.
“Please pray for our Challenger Family.”
Roads around the school were closed off as Madison police investigate.
