Blue Jays Shock Everybody By Trading Superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. To Top World Series Contender In Blockbuster Trade Proposal
A blockbuster trade proposal has the Toronto Blue Jays setting off fireworks across the league by dealing superstar slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a Major League powerhouse.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and fellow All-Star Bo Bichette are entering their contract years. Both were mentioned as potential trade candidates leading up to the 2024 MLB trade deadline, but the Blue Jays decided to retain both.
The Blue Jays are widely expected to buy this offseason, with multiple reports indicating that they’re among the front-runners for superstar Juan Soto. The Jays, who have met with Soto, are one of baseball’s main wild card teams to follow throughout the winter.
If GM Ross Atkins and CEO Mark Shapiro miss out on Soto and aren’t able to strengthen the roster the way they intended, the best bet may be to commence a rebuild. Obviously, that starts with dealing out Bichette and Guerrero Jr. before they hit free agency next year.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has Toronto sending Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the AL East rival New York Yankees in exchange for three of their top prospects in outfielder Spencer Jones and pitchers Brock Selvidge and Clayton Better:
“The Yankees certainly need the help at first base, as all six players who spent time there this season posted an OPS of .661 or worse. It’s a foregone conclusion they’ll decline their $17M club option on Anthony Rizzo in pursuit of a better solution.
As was the case last winter with Soto, it’s going to take somewhat of a king’s ransom for the Yankees to get their man. But what an absolute wrecking ball of a lineup they would have in 2025 if they manage to re-sign Soto and trade for Guerrero.”
The Jays would rather not have to trade their franchise star to a heated division rival. But the Yankees have a deep farm system and the wide-open championship window to make a move for a player like Guerrero Jr., who would be a nice consolation prize if the Yankees lost the Soto free agent sweepstakes.
Jays’ Best Bet Is To Extend & Build Around Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
At the end of the day, the best bet for a big-market and deep-pocketed team like the Jays is to build around Vladdy Jr. The 25-year-old loves playing for the Jays, and he’s made it clear that this is where he wants to be.
Toronto could trade Guerrero Jr. for prospects, but those are merely lottery tickets. They should meet his asking price and continue to try and build a championship team around him.
