REPORT: Several Chicago Bears Veterans Want Rookie QB Caleb Williams Benched Immediately
The Bears seem to be making all the right moves when it comes to building their squad, but it just isn’t working out. Despite drafting Caleb Williams as the No. 1 overall pick earlier this year and surrounding him with offensive weapons, things have already soured in the Chi.
The team fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Tuesday, just 10 months after he got the job.
Head coach Matt Eberflus announced the firing one day after promising changes. Passing game coordinator Thomas Brown has been promoted in Waldron’s place.
Meanwhile, it’s been reported that several Bears players want Williams’ being a starter to be among changes to the team’s offense.
According to Bears columnist Marc Silverman (H/T JPAFootball), multiple veterans want Tyson Bagent starting instead.
Matt Eberflus Wants To Continue With Caleb Williams At QB
Despite the above, it doesn’t appear that Eberflus has any such plans, at least not right now.
“Caleb is our starter,” he said on Monday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Williams’ rookie season hasn’t gone quite as well as most expected following his exploits in college. The quarterback went 16-of-30 for 120 passing yards in Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots and was sacked nine times.
He is also the most-sacked QB in the NFL this season, having gone down 38 times.
“Definitely this game is a lot to learn from for myself, just speaking on some of the situational things,” he said after the Week 10 loss. “Obviously, there’s a few passes every game that you wish you could have back and things like that. But I think situationally, this game was a great learning experience for me with some of these situations that I could have done better for sure.”
Time will tell whether his play improves under the new OC.
