Patrick Mahomes’ former WR explains why he didn’t get the ball more in Super Bowl-winning campaign

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James explained why he didn’t get the ball more from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. James played in nine games with the Chiefs last season helping them win the Super Bowl.

The storyline throughout the season for the Chiefs was the lack of weapons at wide receiver and some key players making drops. After starting the year injured, James was activated from the injured list on Nov. 18 and played down the stretch. In the nine games, James started one game recording 10 receptions for 114 yards but didn’t find the endzone. Taking to social media, James responded to fans saying Daniel Jones made him and he has struggled everywhere else, as James says it was a tough spot in Kansas City as other players were going to get the ball before him.

“1. Dj didnt make me. Still have to get open and the ball thrown your way. BTW i hope he throws for 5k. 2. Love playing with Pat. But when you have TK, Paid Wr’s & 2nd Rounders. I believe you have to get them the ball more even if i am open. It is a business,” James wrote on X.

It is an interesting comment from James, but one that does have some truth to it. Travis Kelce, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, and Skyy Moore were all going to get the ball before him.Even though James didn’t have a ton of success with the Chiefs, he still caught the ball when called upon and is now a Super Bowl champion.Richie James is currently a free agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the first round of the NFL draft.

Worthy is a deep ball threat who brings a much-needed weapon to the Chiefs wide receiver room, which Patrick Mahomes is eager about.

“I think this year we’re going to have a team that’s built to throw the ball deep,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said on the Pat McAfee Show. “Coach [Andy] Reid’s been preaching it all offseason, we’re going to get back to throwing the deep ball. I have to be smart when we do that, but at the same time I want to be that explosive offense that we’ve seen in the past.”

Kansas City also signed Hollywood Brown to a deal, while the status of Rice at the beginning of the year is up in the air due to a possible suspension.
