Tom Hanks Insulted ’77 Million People’ With ‘Disgusting’ SNL Sketch

Tom Hanks has sparked considerable controversy after reprising his character Doug from “Black Jeopardy” during the 50th anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live.”

Doug, depicted as an oblivious Trump supporter wearing a MAGA hat, was first introduced in 2016, showcasing both the differences and surprising similarities between Trump supporters and Black culture.

The initial airing of the “Black Jeopardy” sketch took place in 2016 amidst a contentious election period.

Hanks’ character, Doug, a white supporter of Trump, discovered unexpected commonalities with Black contestants, resulting in both humorous and thought-provoking exchanges.

The sketch received acclaim for its sophisticated examination of cultural divides and shared experiences.

Nevertheless, Hanks’ recent performance did not resonate positively with a portion of the audience.

The 50th anniversary special of SNL was unreserved in its political commentary.

Steve Martin’s opening monologue made a reference to Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

In January 2025, President Donald Trump enacted an executive order changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”

Martin humorously remarked, “I was actually vacationing on a friend’s boat down in the Gulf of Steve Martin.”

Subsequently, Martin Short joined Martin on stage, resulting in a mock call to ICE due to Short’s Canadian heritage.

The evening also included a parody of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Misérables, humorously referencing Trump’s departure from Manhattan: “I dreamed a dream that King Kong died, then I remembered he’s in Florida.”

Lorne Michaels, the creator of SNL, has asserted that the show targets those in positions of power.

Michaels remarked, “Whoever is in power is probably awful.”

In the most recent sketch, Doug declines to shake hands with host Darnell Hayes, portrayed by Kenan Thompson.

The sketch featured Kenan Thompson as host Darnell Hayes, with contestants played by Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, and Eddie Murphy.

A memorable moment included Eddie Murphy impersonating Tracy Morgan, adding a comedic twist.
