There was a very close call at Chicago Midway International Airport on Tuesday morning as a Southwest Airlines plane nearly collided with a private jet.

The Southwest pilots expertly aborted the landing, taking off into the air again as soon as the landing gear touched the tarmac to avoid hitting the other aircraft.

Southwest Flight 2504 was later able to land safely at the airport following the near-catastrophe.

“The crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident,” a Southwest spokesperson told CNN in an email. “Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees.”

The incident is similar to one which took place in December, when a plane carrying the Gonzaga men’s basketball team nearly got hit by a Delta Airlines flight at LAX.

Delta is back under scrutiny after one of its flights crashed at Toronto Pearson Airport in Canada last week. The airplane landed on the icy runway before flipping over and skidding across it on its head.

Fortunately, no one was killed, but several people were hospitalized with injuries.

Southwest Airlines Near-Disaster Just One Of Many Worrisome Aviation Occurences

Tuesday’s incident involving Southwest Airlines follows several serious aviation mishaps over the last few months.

Last Wednesday saw two people killed after two small airplanes collided at the Marana Regional Airport in Arizona. Per the Federal Aviation Administration, the airport does not have a working air traffic control tower.

The worst of these incidents occurred near the Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington D.C. late last month, when a military helicopter flew into an American Airlines flight, killing everyone on both aircraft as they went down into the Potomac River.

67 people lost their lives.
