Mark Davis Makes Interesting Comparison Between Tom Brady & Jon Gruden While Explaining The GOAT’s Role With Raiders Amid Rumors That He’s “Running Everything”
Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis clarified Tom Brady’s role with the team following a report that the former quarterback is running the operation in Sin City.
Back in October, NFL owners approved Tom Brady’s bid to join the Raiders as a minority owner. The NFL icon and partner Tom Wagner hold a 10 percent stake in the franchise, with Brady himself owning a five percent stake.
Speaking on “The Ryen Russillo Podcast” last week, The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that the seven-time Super Bowl champion and three-time league MVP “is running everything in Vegas.”
Davis spoke at the big press conference on Monday where Pete Carroll was introduced as the Raiders’ new head coach. Davis said Tom Brady will take on the “football” role that he had hoped former head coach Jon Gruden would fill when he was signed to a $100 million contract back in 2018, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio:
“Bringing in Tom Brady was bringing in somebody on the football that I had been lacking having here in the organization. Back in I guess it was ’18, with Jon Gruden. He was somebody that I brought in and really expected to be that person on the football side that would bring stability to the organization. He had a 10-year contract and all that, and he had his head chopped off. And we were put in a really bad position as an organization.”
After a decade away from coaching, Gruden left the ‘Monday Night Football’ broadcast both to sign the lucrative 10-year deal in 2018. Gruden resigned early in the 2021 season after emails were leaked of him using racist, misogynistic and homophobic language.
The Raiders’ first big moves with Brady as a minority owner were naming Carroll and John Spytek their new head coach and GM, respectively. Now comes the hard part: Improving a tremendously flawed roster that is miles away from competing with the top teams in the AFC.
Tom Brady Brings The Experience The Raiders Need
Brady is still in the early stages of his NFL ownership career, but his status as the most accomplished player in league history can only help the Raiders’ long-term project in rebuilding the organization into a winner.
He should have no problem recruiting other big-named players to Sin City. It’s a lot easier for Davis to sell players on the idea of playing for TB12 and a future Hall of Fame head coach in Carroll.
