REPORT: Atlanta Falcons Have Already Made A Shocking Decision On The Future Of QB Kirk Cousins
One day after their season ended with a loss to the Carolina Panthers in overtime, the Atlanta Falcons have reportedly already made a decision on the future with quarterback Kirk Cousins.
The Falcons entered 2024 as the consensus favorites to win the NFC South after signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal worth $180 million in free agency. But the four-time Pro Bowler had 14 uneven starts that led to him being benched in favor of Michael Penix Jr. for the final three games.
Atlanta’s offense enjoyed a great spark after Penix Jr. took over, as they averaged 32 points per game in his three starts. However, the Falcons finished a disappointing 8-9 and missed out on the playoffs for the seventh straight year.
According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, the Falcons plan to hold onto Kirk Cousins for 2025 even though Penix Jr. is the starter.
“From what I understand, the Falcons are not just going to release him. They will listen to teams in regards to trade offers, but they wanna get something back from that deal. And they’re willing to bring him back as a backup quarterback if it doesn’t happen that way.”
Cousins’ lucrative $180 million deal includes $100 million in guaranteed money. The deal was seen as a giant risk by many since the 36-year-old was coming off a season-ending Achilles tear he suffered last October.
Atlanta faced further criticism for using the No. 8 pick on Penix Jr. despite signing Cousins to a long-term deal. But judging by the performances of both in 2024, it looks like the Falcons may have actually saved themselves by taking Cousins’ successor.
Teams That Could Eye A Kirk Cousins Trade
If the Falcons and Cousins agree to a divorce, there should be several teams interested in the ex-Minnesota Vikings star. The Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans and New York Giants all need a new starting quarterback, and the Cleveland Browns could have interest if they’re no longer sold on Deshaun Watson.
The New York Jets could look at Cousins if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return. Or how about the Pittsburgh Steelers, who already feel like a safe bet to move on from Russell Wilson? Speaking of AFC teams, Anthony Richardson could use some competition in Indianapolis.
